A strong earthquake in Taiwan on Saturday killing at least seven people, most of a 17-story building collapsed, some 35 people were still feared trapped hour rescue operation.

“I was watching TV, and after a sudden burst of shaking, I heard a boom. I opened the metal door and saw the building opposite fall down,” said a 71-year-old neighbor, who gave his name as Chang.

The plumbing mechanic, said he fetched a ladder and some tools and greatly save some window bars open for a woman crying for help.
“He asked me to go back and save her husband, her child, but I was afraid of the gas explosion, so do not go in. At that time people were calling for help, but the ladder was not long enough, there was no way to save them.”
The quake, centered 27 miles southeast of Tainan, at a depth of14 miles, the US Geological Survey said.

China helps
China has offered assistance in the wake of the deadly earthquake in Taiwan. According to China’s relations management office in Taiwan, mainland officials have been in contact with their counterparts in Taiwan since shortly after the earthquake struck the southern city of Tainan.
China has sent a letter offering emergency help if needed and expressed condolences to people who suffered from the earthquake.

“People are calling for help”
Rescuers have described attempts to save the people from the 17-storey residential building in Tainan.

The emergency response center told the Associated Press that three people died, including a 10-day infant, a 55-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man. Taiwan’s official news agency said the babies and the man pulled out a 17-storey residential building Guan Wei and both later pronounced dead. Several buildings collapsed
Taiwan’s China Post newspaper said on its website that more than a building collapsed in the earthquake.
“Collapsed buildings reported Tainan, scene. The rescue teams from the city government has set up a level there is a disaster recovery center. Onlookers urged not to block access to emergency crews moved in,” the newspaper said.

Tainan City Fire Brigade said earlier that this was the way to the site of a building that had partially collapsed, and Liu Shih-chung, an official of the Tainan City Government, said the city has set up a disaster recovery center.
No other details were immediately available, but many people in Taiwan said the tremor was strong.
“I hugged the wall and put your face to the wall,” Wu Pao-feng, the Tainan resident, told Reuters after the earthquake struck.

Breaking news – big earthquake in Taiwan
A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck southern Taiwan, according to the US Geological Survey.
The earthquake struck around 2000 GMT on Friday, six miles underground.
The earthquake was located about 22 miles (36 kilometers) southeast of Yujing, according to the survey.
